There's one of those on my way home from work. Had no idea there'd be more out there.

I think that's my biggest motivation now; is letting someone down. Not being ready enough for challenges and letting things get through. As the dad, it's up to me to prepare for everything and be ready for it. He'll never see this but I'm so thankful for his guidance. (Of course I'll tell him)

Sometimes we need a reminder that we've always got work to do, and if a dad has done his job, you'll realize that they're right. Taking care of your friends, girlfriend, wife, kids, family; you're always on the clock and someone's depending on you.

He's had his stumbles, and I've given him a taste of his own medicine. But now with my own kids, I hear his voice when I try to teach my kids. I think the big lesson is that Dad's aren't there to be your friend, but to be your dad. And the best of them can blend the 2 things as much as possible.

I remember telling him how I was always trying to get my wife to clean out her cars. He said well why don't you just do it if it's that important? He was telling me that I was making excuses. Look the man isn't perfect, but he's doing his job of making me the best that he can.

Growing up, even Hispanic, I always knew he loved me. He was never afraid to straight up say it. Even to kiss me. But I knew he would push me to me to be the best I could be. Grades, work ethic, husband, father, everything.

When I bought my house, he came over and saw the pine needles in my gutter from my neighbor's tree, and said, I wonder what your neighbors think of that? Damn if I'll ever not clean my gutter again. Having said all that, you might think he's just an asshole. He's not.

I'll never forget, when I got my first car and I took him for a drive, he got in, silently ran his hand over the dust on the dash, and then buckled his seatbelt. Such a dick move but it was his way of saying you spent all this money and you can't keep it clean?

Things got better when I moved out and I could understand him with some space. What a thoughtful man. He sacrificed himself for us but never once held it over us. He gave us room to grow, but was always there. Even when he corrected us, it was with a suggestion rather than an iron fist.

I played soccer and baseball as a kid and we always had snacks. Now my son plays basketball and it's my turn to do the same thing. I always make sure to bring extras for the coaches and any siblings that are around or even other kids that walk by. Everyone deserves snacks.

I know it's not quite the same but my neighbor Ralph cruises through every weekend looking to make sure we're working on our cars. He's the one that told me, just do 1 thing every week. You're doing more than 1 thing homie and you're doing great. Keep pushing, you're an inspiration.
June 10, 2025 at 5:28 AM
Hell yeah homie. Just get as ready as you can. Worst case you don't pass and have to take it again but now you've got an idea of what to expect. Just move 1 step forward every day.
