As such I think it suffers for it and mostly just left a bad taste in my mouth where if I had seen it premiere it might have been life-changing.

Full Metal Jacket (1987) needs no introduction and to me I think that's part of the problem. Almost every line in this movie has been engrained in the culture and quoted by schoolchildren such that what may have been situational black humour ultimately stands to blunt the anti-war edge.

Annette (2021) is definitely trying some things, a manic whirlwind that really plays with the musical format. I think I appreciated it more than I enjoyed it.

Commando (1985) is maybe the opposite. The pinnacle of machismo-fuelled high action nonsense. Commando is pretty fun as it turns out. Good banter, great soundtrack. Exactly what it's trying to be.

You can definitely see how Ring (1998) captured so many people's imagination when it released. Horrifying in it's plodding mundanity and expert restraint, truly outstanding.

Scooby Doo (2002) is a fever dream that is at time both very sincerely homaging the cartoons while also hampered by the cynical edge of the era. It mostly lands, Lillard was born to play Shaggy and virtual Scooby is only a little cursed.

I guess, were those good tools even notable on 2nd Impact Sean relative to the rest of their pre-dumpster kit?
