One of the things I had on my to-do list before leaving the Netherlands was a visit to @naturalis.bsky.social.

It's amazing how and with what detail everything is displayed! Truly inspiring.

We wrote a comment in npj Heritage Science to raise awareness of the accelerating threat to oases globally.
We call for immediate action to protect this unique system.

This week I will be participating in the VII ConserBio in Seville (Spain) with:

- Talk: Thursday 18, 5:53 p.m. – 5:59 p.m. progress from @integradiv.bsky.social
- Poster: by my master's student Julia, who unfortunately will not be able to attend.

See you there!

After spending some weeks disconnecting in the Azores, it's time to get back to work with 100% motivation!

In particular, Flores Island made me emphasise the danger of exotic species on islands. I am really concerned about the impact of Cryptomeria japonica and Hedychium gardnerianum on the island.

Our model identified regulating ecosystem services, taxonomic diversity, and intrinsic value of nature as priorities for stakeholders.

Conversely, the preferred characteristics of protected areas (e.g., size and accessibility) varyed mostly based on individual preference.

We framed our survey within the Natures Future Framework to obtain conservation priorities in 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴, 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘵𝘴, 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴, or their relative importance when selecting areas for conservation.

Despite great variability, some commonalities arose.

We are facing a research-implementation crisis in conservation, which endangers initiatives such as Kunming-Montreal (GBF). Success in conserving biodiversity requires the engagement of stakeholders.

We aimed to find conservation priorities of +350 Mediterranean forest stakeholders of four groups.

Coast or mountain, I think we all 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 it's holiday time!

An 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 was also found among +350 forests conservation stakeholders.

The results?
🌴 Plantation area doubled from 1984 to 2021, reaching 71,156 ha.
📍 Biskra leads in date production: 153,135 tons.

Why it matters:
→ Agricultural policies are driving plantation growth right where the palm thrives best 🌱
→ Our findings can help guide smarter land use in arid regions.

We combined my oasis database (peerj.com/articles/188...) and predictive modelling with Ali’s spatial analysis skills to study the evolution of date palm plantations in Algeria over the last few decades.
Take a look at these wonderful maps:

Remember my thermometers for B&G Urban project to estimate the UHI effect at tree level? I placed 39. After 3 moths I had 25, now I only have 12.

My enemies? Local gardeners and street thieves.

Risks of urban ecology...

I am not sure about the usefulness of this data, but some patterns emerge.
