Because I can’t get the family discount as a business traveller no matter how early I book. The fee means that if I travel with a novel group of people, I don’t get the family railcard for that one trip

Your family trips are likely booked in advance, on non peak trains, and are price sensitive, all of which make you useful people to get in to fill up otherwise empty trains

The third largest party in the commons has lots of ability to mouth off and very little power to act so I think it’s useful to look at whether their big talk matches their behaviour when they actually have the ability to do something

But congestion charging and tolls are only complex for the people affected by them. And also, frankly, the complexity is part of the point. You don't _want_ frictionless congestion charging! You want people to be aware of what they're doing every time they do it so they stop doing it

That would be nice! It's not worth the added complexity, political and infrastructural cost, and you can already just do congestion charging and tolls

lots of objectives for road pricing. I think we should prioritise the simple, easy and privacy-preserving option over trying to build a panopticon for cars. And I would _love_ a panopticon for cars

But — hear me out — it's easy. If we want to do congestion charging as well, we can just do that. London did! If we want to toll motorways we can do that. Birmingham did! If we want to provide subsidies for people to live where there's no public transport – why on earth would we do that but we can

Good news you'll never guess what other information we already take about cars

honestly seems _fine_. buying a car is a big complex endeavour I think it's easy enough for everyone involved to give the amount of road tax due on it as part of the process.

it's not fair that i have to pay alcohol duty on wine i cook with but i don't think i should be able to capture the evaporated ethanol for distillation and take it back to ocado for a refund

"but it's not fair to have to pay for miles driven on private roads/overseas" ok but it's easy. the government can just… do the easy way. not every tax has to be riven with loopholes.
