The best way to break this cycle is by significantly slashing the aggregate number of newcomers; and shifting away from family-reunification to skills as the main basis for immigration. To put it bluntly: America doesn’t need Somali Uber drivers just as autonomous vehicles take off. As for those already here, America might follow Denmark’s lead in actively breaking up ethnic ghettos, while, of course, mass-deporting anyone even marginally involved in such fraudulent schemes. Law-abiding Americans, including law-abiding immigrants, deserve no less.

Imagine parting ways with the Democratic Party not because of its unwavering support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he violated international law and waged a bloody campaign against civilians in Gaza; not because of its humiliating failure to mount meaningful opposition to the Trump administration's assault on just about everything of value in the country; not because it continues to run candidates in their 70s and 8os, one of whom opted to die in office at 90 rather than cede her seat to someone younger; not because of its inability to expand access to health care, or protect immigrants, or tax the wealthy, or really get anything done at all; not because of its politely noncommittal affect and rhetoric of facile uplift, or its members' tendency to address the public as if they are delivering the keynote at a corporate retreat; not because the Democrats have no political vision, something of a liability for a political party; but rather because of the single sensible - if very belated - thing they have done in recent memory, which was to usher a doddering Joe Biden out of the 2024 presidential race.

For their part, most fascist leaders have recognized that a seizure of power in the teeth of conservative and military opposition would be possible only with the help of the street, under conditions of social disorder likely to lead to wildcat assaults on private property, social hierarchy, and the state's monopoly of armed force. A fascist resort to direct action would thus risk conceding advantages to fascism's principal enemy, the Left, still powerful in the street and workplace in interwar Europe.26 Such tactics would also alienate those very elements— the army and the police — that the fascists would need later for planning and carrying out aggressive national expansion. Fascist parties, however deep their contempt for conservatives, had no plausible future aligning themselves with any groups who wanted to uproot the bases of conservative power. Since the fascist route to power has always passed through cooperation with conservative elites, at least in the cases so far known, the strength of a fascist movement in itself is only one of the determining variables in the achievement (or not) of power, though it is surely a vital one. Fascists did have numbers and muscle to offer to conservatives caught in crisis in Italy and Germany, as we have seen. Equally important, however, was the conservative elites' willingness to work with fascism; a reciprocal flexibility on the fascist leaders' part; and the urgency of the crisis that induced them to cooperate with each other.

all of this talk of spiritual revival by conservative Christians just makes me think of this after the Nazis coming to power in Germany
In 1933, when Hitler was appointed as chancellor, the neighboring and venerable St. Mary’s Church celebrated. There, 2,000 worshipers participated in a “service of thanksgiving” and heard pastor Joachim Hossenfelder describe the new chancellor as “the best man imaginable … a man who was all of a piece, cast of purity, piety, energy and strength of character, our Adolf Hitler.” After the Nazi electoral victory, there was a surge in church attendance (with one church district claiming an 1,800 percent increase in church membership). Many took this as a sign that a “spiritual awakening” was breaking out and church leaders declared it a joyous “ecclesiastical event” or “God’s hour.” Indeed, Hitler’s promise that Nazism was a “moral” political movement and that the new Reich would “extend its strong, protecting hand over Christianity as the basis of our entire morality and the family” seemed to be coming true. In 1935, across the river from where my family lived, the Nazi-run parliament unanimously passed the Reich Citizenship Law. A deepening of the already emerging racial regime, this law categorized who was a German citizen, initially stripping those of Jewish descent of their citizenship. Proof of Aryan descent became essential to maintain or gain citizenship, and this was done primarily through both ancestral birth certificates and ecclesial baptismal records. This use of sacramental records meant that, according to historian Kyle Jantzen, “Churches became the most important site for the implementation of Nazi racial segregation.”
