If only the U.S. government had its own secure messaging system and didn't have to rely on an application like Signal that's available to ordinary Americans like me.

I have been using Signal for several months for messaging that's more secure than SMS. While its security is exemplary (Edward Snowden has endorsed it), it provides no protection against misuse by morons.
