wtf. a few items have started doing that in the last month or so, not completely sure what's going on, market manipulation? I know there's been a few pump-and-dump schemes in the market lately.
some items go nuts and then crash overnight, the best I've got now are probably these.

So yesterday I realized that infrared light from the sun penetrates wildfire smoke more effectively than visible light, and also that my old canon 1D II has very little IR filtering, unlike my 1D IV. I was lucky to guess the focus without live view lol #photography
true colour photo of a setting red sun, streaked and partially obscured by smoke in a flat grey sky - but, to the unaided eye, the sun is completely invisible since only infrared light is forming the sharp image of the sun. infrared light focuses at different distances than visible light, and as a result, the landscape in the foreground is completely out of focus. Canon 1D mark II, 210mm f/5.0 1/250 ISO 200 a crop of the same scene photographed with my newer 1D mark 4 camera. all flat, grey and dreary, the sun is completely indistinct, hidden by thick smoke. this is roughly how it looked to my eyes.

I think that's one of the few I have not gone on lol
normally I'd bike there, so I largely stuck to the freeride bike trails in the area. I did a lot of trail maintenance, too.
here's a couple photos from from a stupidly long ride in May 2005. two decades next month guhhh

Looking out to the Georgia Strait from a wet sand flat. the silhouette of distant mountains divides the striated red, black and orange sky from the seawater reflecting it. about 30mm ff eq, almost unedited, basically just exposure.

Within five minutes of the quoted photo I got this one of a Yellowlegs shorebird.
the same sequence of events occurred the next day. #birds
a small bird with long yellow legs and slender beak wades through a small tidepool. the bird is warmly lit by the yellow-tone winter sun as the wet sand and water is reflecting blue sky and an almost perfect mirror image of the bird. old Canon DSLR with older Canon 210mm zoom, cropped. I need a longer lens or three sadface

latest entry in the I-should-have-noticed-and-figured-it-out-years-ago saga; my monitor was in a mode that squashed gamma and cranked the blue channel.

also last profile didn't correct colour in dark areas. possibly due to DisplayCAL applying RGB offset to black level? was 40, now 4.
DisplayCAL GUI. pointer highlighting the "edit test chart" button DisplayCAL's "edit test chart" GUI. black offset value selected. now 4, was 40. not 100% sure this is what did it but things look corrected and good across the whole range now. my monitor's gamma issue was probably also a factor, and I'm also using the rec1886 gamma curve now instead of "gamma 2.2"
