Is our best answer to make the game play itself more, like the auto-combat chips in Nier:Automata? Or do we reduce it to "Skill issue" and decide that the highest difficulties are optional and do not have any progression benefits and only cosmetics/extra XP? Ignoring these players entirely.

This question is aimed at multiplayer PvE games with random matchmaking. It doesn't make sense to make well defined balanced difficulty tiers and then have a slider to make it easier again. It defeats the purpose of the fine tuned balancing. Not to mention people will abuse it for rewards.
