Imagine you are a former prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and reduced to publishing articles such as the one below.

Friedrich Merz sums up coalition agreement: on foreign policy/defense

Greens won’t play ball so easily; as matters stand party leaders @franziskabrantner.de and Felix Banaszak say they won’t provide a two-thirds majority next week for chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz’ defense and infrastructure plans. First big challenge for Merz to show his political skills.

New dawn in Berlin.

It was a huge pleasure joining my great former colleague Sumi Somaskanda tonight on BBC News for commentary on the German election night. A messy outcome, but the center-right CDU/CSU and the center-left SPD (plus possibly the Greens) seem ready to form a new government quickly.
February 23, 2025 at 8:59 PM
Germany’s center-right wins it, but likely stays below 30 percent, raining on Merz’ victory parade; if FDP and BSW get into parliament (ARD says they won’t, ZDF says they will), it will take another three-way coalition to form a new government. Could be a long night.

Scholz wins it on “more believable” and “more likable”; “more competent” is a tie. But this is no presidential race.

“A second-term president has only 18 months.” This dictums seem to be pushing Trump to do everything at once. This probably means that the disastrous economic consequences will be felt more quickly, and the domestic backlash will be the greater for it. #silverlining

Now Merkel enters the fray, strongly criticizing Merz, and the CDU enters a downward spiral. Thanks to Merz’ blunder, the CDU/CSU may now not win the election, with them and the others all around 20-22%. Then another three-way coalition is looming…

The effects on Germany’s budget if the platforms of Germany center-right/-left parties CDU/CSU, SPD, Greens, FDP were implemented, acc. to Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft. Ironically the ideas of the”fiscally hawkish” FDP (which blew up the Scholz government) would cause the greatest damage.

German opposition leader @friedrich-merz.bsky.social says his govt will set up a national security council in the chancellery & produce a new national security strategy within a year. Calls for strong armed forces. “For us, the NATO goal of spending 2% is the lower limit.”
