Using Treasury's estimates of the daily cost of alert levels and the Oxford Stringency Index in other OECD countries I estimated how much it would have cost to implement other strategies over 2020-22. My conclusion: our response saved lives and was one of the most cost effective in the OECD.

At the Auckland Writers Festival this Sunday alongside Kimiora Raerino and Lavinia McGee-Repia to talk about the Covid response. Particularly interested to hear from Kimiora and Lavinia on the marae-led response in a discussion chaired by Simon Wilson.

While I studiously avoid the radio this morning, here is a plot of estimates of the cumulative costs of New Zealand's elimination-based response versus a counterfactual Swedish response. I've used the Oxford Stringency Index for restrictions and Treasury estimates (Aug 2020) of daily costs

I saw it in Whitcoulls on Lambton Quay last week, but should be widely available from this week

I’ll be talking about the Covid Response at other events around the country, including on panels at the Auckland Writers Festival in May and the International Science Festival in Dunedin in July.

In just over two weeks I’ll be launching my book on the Covid response. This was my most challenging book project by far, and even then I’ve just scratched the surface. If you are in Wellington on April 29 come along to hear me talk about it with Susie Ferguson.

If you are wondering how the Freeze Peach Union is handling the Wiles judgement, it is - of course - celebrating the Court's excessively narrow take on academic freedom.

But which plucky Kiwi corporate should we choose? Deka, Georgie Pie, or Prebble's own Tranzrail?

The Times Higher Ed has highlighted the importance of this case to academia as a whole, but it is vital that it result in change at the University of Auckland. We can’t afford to have our largest university managed and run this way. 4/4

Throughout this period, the UoA was basking in the reflected glory that Siouxsie brought them while internally she was being treated apallingly. 3/N

Here Borissenko asks whether the steps the UoA did take were satisfactory. The incident where they shut up shop before the holidays w/o installing a security system followed their intervention to prevent her using her own home security provider. This left her unprotected over a critical period 2/N

There is a good article about Wiles v the UoA in this month’s North & South by Sasha Borissenko. This passage in particular highlights the “aggressive” (and I’m quoting Judge Holden here) approach of the UoA, following Siouxsie’s personal grievance. 1/N

The University of Auckland’s lawyers seem to have their work cut out for them in their defense of Siouxsie Wiles’ claims. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/siouxsie-...

We also heard today that the University criticised Wiles for the way she reacted to being confronted by Billy TK and Vinnie Westwood. This is heartbreaking.
