I recollect that at this year's IC2S2 there was a poster that somehow made it through peer review where the references to the eugenics of the past were more than subtle. (It claimed to make inferences on personal characteristics based on facial expressions using image recognition.)

I can understand that sentiment a lot. But I also know the other side, and I know how insanely frustrating and difficult to prevent such things can be. I’m not trying to sugarcoat the insane data breach, just acknowledge that they must’ve had a bad morning asking why they didn’t see it earlier.

I wasn’t debating that, and it’s really unfortunate that it wasn’t recognized by them. But they did take responsibility, which is unfortunately not common these days.

I had to work with the OpenReview API earlier this year for IC2S2 and I noticed how brittle it was. So this doesn’t really surprise me, although it is of course bad. But I think one hour from notification to fix is strong!

I am not against using GPT models in helping you code — please, be my guest, I use them all the time myself.

But:

- understand what they’re doing
- understand what time a PR review will take
- treat the maintainers with respect.
