The theater for my screening of THE SECRET AGENT last night on Brazilian Independence Day is awesome. Every time someone onstage during the intro said anything about Brazil the entire audience started hooting and hollering.

Saw this post on the other site and felt compelled to respond. There is an impulse to fall back on a kind of existentially sentimental “muchness” when encountering totemic, canonized works. It is perceived, I think, as respecting the work more than suggesting a narrower thesis.

Reading this - a massive “collective memoir” of Aboriginal activist Tracker Tilmouth gathered by Alexis Wright, being reissued next month by ND. It is an ode to political storytelling and the beauty of collective history-making, as much as a eulogy for a legendary and beloved man.
