Ha, I will go sit in time out. I apologize for the snark in my initial comment. I responded to what I perceived as snark and perhaps reflexive anti homeowner sentiment in yours. Then the smug insults and projections flowed lol. What a journey to that screenshot ;)

Ah, definitely saw that happen during the pandemic, people dumped trash next to a school dumpster that was locked and not serviced while schools were closed, infuriating! Didn't realize free dumpsters had been placed elsewhere specifically for the homeless. Thanks for sharing.

When I asked if homeowners were crowding out usage by homeless, that wasn't snark. I'll try again: Did there used to be a trash service program that was later shut down because homeowners took advantage of it?

Believe it or not, I agree ;)

I'm confused. Free trash service was proposed. Currently city crews and volunteers de facto already do free trash service. I'm not sure it's a lack of dumpsters that leads to littering, I've picked up sharps _next_ to a dumpster. If more dumpsters would lead to less litter, great, let's do it.

Did they fill up the bins to where the homeless couldn't use them? I'm trying to figure out what the objection is. There's no such thing as free, it'll get paid for one way or another. I pay my trash bill and don't illegally dump, I'm fine sticking with that.

I've picked up sharps and trash left at an elementary school many times. A critical part of the solution is for people to stop shooting drugs at elementary schools and stockpiling trash on public sidewalks. Schools & sidewalks are public goods!
November 11, 2025 at 6:15 PM
Lol, you suggested free trash service but then appeared to walk it back because homeowners and businesses would take advantage of it 🤷 I was quoting your words back to you as I'm unaware of homeowners driving across town to use dumpsters meant for homeless people.

They are only arresting people with outstanding warrants for committing actual crimes, including actual violence, not for being homeless. It is not in turn violence to hold people accountable.

Free trash service for people who dump sharps on an elementary school sidewalk? Great idea! Where do homeowners and businesses get free trash service they can take advantage of? I've been paying for trash service this entire time. If there's a legit free option, cool, let me know.

Telling people they can't camp on a sidewalk and stockpile trash, blocking the sidewalk from use by those in wheelchairs etc is not violence. They are being offered shelter, but they refuse and decide to camp elsewhere, only to be given the same offer again.

Are unions in charge of city government or are elected officials? I appreciate your work as council President. But just because 11 union members go on strike doesn't mean city officials should stop working. They don't get to overrule the results of an election just because they are unionized.

The article says 82% of respondents but the survey says 82% of _riders_.
October 24, 2025 at 4:38 AM
Sure, but from the survey: "82% of riders cite other riders’ behavior as a reason they feel unsafe while riding TriMet." Assuming they got their numbers right, that's undiluted, riders only.
October 24, 2025 at 4:37 AM
We don't need to take their perspective as accurately describing reality, I think we agree there. But I didn't see anything that seemed to weigh their perspective over actual riders/employees, their perspective needs consideration.
October 24, 2025 at 4:28 AM
That struck me as dismissive since both the article and survey did not in fact highlight the concerns of non-riders. What's your take on the perspective of employees and riders?
October 24, 2025 at 4:25 AM
I'm not mad. Your original post: "Why do we have to listen to the opinions of who people who do not ride transit but think they’d feel unsafe on it? They are literally making up situations in their heads where they might feel uncomfortable and we’re supposed to take that seriously?"
October 24, 2025 at 4:20 AM
No, I'm saying it's not fair to dismiss the concerns of the employees and active riders who experience unsafe conditions. See pages 26-28 in the survey for more details. It's possible to both support public transit _and_ to think it sucks that bus drivers get threatened by passengers.
October 24, 2025 at 4:14 AM
I encourage you to click through to the survey. Only 13% of respondents self-identified as non-riders. We ought to take the perspective of TriMet employees and 87% riders seriously and not use the 13% as an excuse to ignore them. Also, non-riders today might be riders tomorrow. ✌️

Will you give them a forehead kiss even if they don't? Did the people who originally stole the art and artifacts before they arrived at the Louvre also deserve forehead kisses? What distinguishes bad stealing from badass stealing?
October 24, 2025 at 2:16 AM
The article literally starts with a real story about an actual bus driver, not the straw man non-riders you've invented and are dunking on. Why not be thoughtful and empathetic and take the bus driver seriously?
October 23, 2025 at 4:42 AM
Driving a car has risks, but usually it's not from a mentally unstable person threatening to or actually stabbing you. But that's what bus drivers etc. have to deal with. Do you care about them and their working conditions? Or are you ideologically committed to dismissing their concerns?
October 22, 2025 at 4:15 AM
Do you think there are any legitimate, good faith concerns/criticisms about how the implementation has gone so far?
June 20, 2025 at 8:56 PM
In your last comment in today's council meeting, you reiterated that collusion by any means (golf course chat, etc.) is already illegal but that this proposal is a technical fix. Several public testimonies in favor also asserted the same. Can you explain what loophole this policy is closing?
