Another thing that I always think about with Hopper’s works (and this one in particular) are those gazebo-like buildings in medieval/renaissance painting that are both outside and inside and are built around the characters to make a a stage for the happenings in the painting

This is an amazing book about literally all of the topics you mentioned. It’s a great read too.
