Read can also mean to understand something. Like when someone says "I read you loud and clear." You don't "listen loud and clear", do you? People can say they listened to audiobook, it's correct, but so is saying they read it. 1/2

Why is it a cop out? Audiobooks have the same words as the physical books

Reading isn't always faster than listening; it depends on the person. And you originally also used the word effectively, which is not the same as speed.
