I can completely understand not wanting Byron to overshadow Shelley’s story. It’s her story, not his.

I admit I would kind of love to see a movie commit to historically accurate 1830s fashion, though. The absurdity! The *hairstyles*!

I watched a review of the new Frankenstein by a fashion historian (haven’t seen the film myself), and she said that it’s deliberately set decades later than the original story—and is pretty accurate for *that* era, if somewhat stylized for narrative purposes.

I was in a similar mood earlier today:

It usually takes me a few days to remember just how long the lag is between Days-Get-Longer and Weather-Gets-Warmer. For now, I can pretend that this is the first sign of spring.

Gothic (1986). In the “year without a summer,” Mary and Percy Shelley vacation with their friends Clair Clairmont, Dr. Polidori, and Lord Byron. The weather is too cold and rainy for the usual outdoor entertainments, so they change the face of English literature instead.

My family has a casserole that I describe as a savory noodle kugel: a bottom layer of noodles in a cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream mixture, and a top layer of a tomato sauce with hamburger and mushrooms in it, all baked together.

When I was considering whether to apply to literature PhD programs in 2001, I found out that US universities were graduating ~75 PhDs for each open tenure track position. I’m sad to see it’s gotten even worse.

I’m not even any flavor of christian, and that was a big moment of confusion. I thought maybe we were heading toward some kind of “grand dad actually founded a cult” plot (which kind of, I guess?), but there’s no way the archbishop and the rest would indulge that nonsense.

Boston is doing something similar. I think it was almost two years ago we had something like an 80% drop in the murder rate. A key reason was adding a bunch of social workers to police departments who helped entire families, not just the one person who got arrested.

Sorry, it’s too blurry. My close-up vision is fine, but I can’t read a lot of this at all.

I might believe that if they made clothes in my size: 26. As it is, their largest dresses are “XXL/20”, and they have only 18 of those. Compare to over 1300 in their smallest size.

They don’t care about size diversity. This is mockery, plain and simple.

Ah, thanks for explaining! You are being more clever than me. I was just feeling spiteful and soothing myself with thoughts of strategically inflicted anemia.

I’m looking for a book for someone who enjoyed (and finished) the Inspector Linley mysteries. Does Elizabeth George have another series you’d recommend next?

Oppression being denied by whom? hidden from whom? Dr Sam is talking about oppression while erasing the targets of that oppression from the conversation, which seems like THE cardinal sin of any kind of power discourse. It’s a complicated way to say “I don’t listen to marginalized people.”
