During the 28-month siege of Leningrad in World War I, a limited evacuation of some institute staff and a small number of seeds failed when the Germans closed the last rail line going out of Leningrad. 3! The institute's extensive seed collection (consisting of some 120 tonnes of seeds, nuts and roots, including 6,000 varieties of potato) survived, thanks to the 50 botanists who worked there. They protected the seeds from German fire bombs, extreme cold, rodents, and their own hunger - as they would rather starve to death rather than eat the collection. At least 19 of them died, mostly from starvation.

The "glacier" of Spanish imperialism arrived in Teresa's village, Joara, now the Berry Site in Morganton, North Carolina in the early months of 1567. It came in the form of Juan Pardo's expedition into the North American interior (Hudson 1990: 25). At some point between then and June of 1568, she became a captive (exploringioara.org). She was approximately 8 years old (TK). Luisa was swept up by a portion of the same expedition, under the command of of Hernando Moyano, in Manaytique, now Saltville, Virginia (Hudson 1990: 26). She was still a muchacha, pre-pubescent (TK).
