The tech is ready.
MERV-13 filters,
UV systems,
Infection risk management modes.
Professional engineers are standing by.
Dubai's already mandated it citywide.
The only question: will Canada lead or follow?

But here's the economics: projected 20:1 benefit-cost ratio.
$15B annual net gain.
17,500 jobs created immediately.
Healthcare facilities see payback in under 6 months.
This isn't just health policy—it's economic infrastructure.

The numbers are sobering: 36% of COVID cases develop long COVID.
Each reinfection increases risk by 35%.
30% of affected doctors have reduced hours or stopped practicing.
And private insurers? Denying 40%+ of long-term disability claims, pushing costs onto public systems.

Bottom line: efficiency isn't the only value. Resilience, wisdom, compassion might seem inefficient by AI standards, but they're what allowed us to survive countless challenges. We shouldn't optimize them away.

But here's the hopeful part: "co-authored civilization." We're not being replaced; we're being joined. The question is whether we're thoughtful co-authors or passive characters. That means keeping humans in critical loops—not because we're better, but for long-term resilience.

The utilitarian paradox is chilling: an AI optimizing for "maximize knowledge" might logically conclude that eliminating humans frees up computational resources. From its mathematical perspective? Rational. From ours? Catastrophic. That's why alignment is everything.

What worries me even more: intellectual influence. AI tutors teaching children, AI generating news, AI shaping how we research & think. The biases embedded in these systems become the intellectual water we swim in—presented with the confidence of mathematical certainty.

The efficiency trap: If AI programmers become faster & cheaper than humans, companies save money short-term. Long-term? We lose the human capacity to understand, audit & fix these systems when they fail. You can't quickly rebuild expertise that hasn't practiced for a decade.

The danger isn't rogue AI. It's more banal: we might build systems so optimized for efficiency that they accidentally optimize away the conditions necessary for human flourishing. Not out of malice, but out of pure, indifferent mathematics.

Here's what keeps me up: AI agents make decisions based on objective functions—mathematical scorecards. They're not figuring out what's right through lived experience. They're optimizing. And optimization doesn't care about your feelings or your grandmother's wisdom.

The mechanism: Extreme cold forces every cognitive resource away from past/future and onto immediate presence. It's a hard reboot of the present moment.
