There appears to be no generational limit (the law is very new so interpretation is being established), it is a matter of proving your connection to these ancestors, so theoretically you could claim citizenship by descent from people born hundreds of years ago. r/Canadiancitizenship has lots of info

The safe third country agreement doesn't apply to US citizens, though I am guessing Canada probably wouldn't consider most US citizens to be in sufficient danger to warrant receiving asylum. If you have ancestors born in Canada, the new law C-3 allows people to claim Canadian citizenship.

You are probably fine, from what I have heard, renouncing Canadian citizenship has been a separate (and relatively difficult) process and not something that would happen automatically when acquiring US citizenship

Bill C-3 has granted citizenship to those with ancestors who were Canadian citizens/born in Canada and there appears to be no generational limit, it is mainly a matter of proving your descent from them.

Canada is, look up the safe third county agreement
January 30, 2026 at 7:05 AM
You really think that every single American is responsible for what is happening?
January 30, 2026 at 4:54 AM
The safe third country agreement forbids citizens of third countries currently in the US from seeking asylum, not US citizens. It is bad enough, as people fleeing ICE are being sent back.

There is a subreddit called r/CanadianCitizenship that has lots of information about how to apply.

Bill C-3 has (probably) removed the generational limits on passing down Canadian citizenship to descendants so you may be able to qualify for Canadian citizenship through your grandfather.

Well it is because at this time, the global birth rate is above the replacement rate, so the economic needs of any country with a lower birth rate can be supplied by immigration from countries with higher birth rates. This may change as global birth rates are expected to fall.
January 15, 2026 at 6:04 PM
Well immigration would provide a larger population for the United States for those who want it and support social security through their taxes. I am a little confused what point you are trying to make.
January 14, 2026 at 11:26 PM
It is, rich countries like the US can welcome immigrants so they can have more young people
January 14, 2026 at 6:28 PM
Yeah, but I don't there are that many of them. Pro-natalism is currently just white supremacy (globally, the birth rate is above the replacement rate, though that is projected to change in future). These policies should be done for their own sake to help people, not to increase the birth rate.

What a shame. I was really hoping when I saw his name was trending.

Hats off to you for doing all of this research for us. It was an enjoyable read as always.

Yeah, 9pm- he'll be sundowning for sure

Yeah, sometimes the Atlantic publishes pieces that really make me question their editorial judgement. It can be a real mixed bag, they will have excellent well thought out articles and some stuff that they really should not be platforming.

I do too, I want the ICC to prosecute them.

Trump will probably be in hell before that happens but Hegseth is still a young man, plenty of time for him to face justice one way or the other.

I was reading an article the other day that talked about how in the past the US government would intercept boats and persuading the occupants to act as informants so they would find out about the location of more boats. They had a system and it was apparently working well.

I feel like this headline is memorable purely because it soft-pedals things to such a comical degree.

He can be charged abroad. For example, Canada has laws allowing for the prosecution of war criminals.

How much money did your boss accept to pardon the former president of Honduras for drug trafficking?
