I have read the book many times but J.A. Baker’s entry in The Peregrine for 22nd December still moves me. He takes us from the side of a hill in Essex and we fly with his thoughts to the limestone of the Cotswolds and the chalk lands of the south where the truth hits that his peregrines are doomed.
