The scariest story of all:
In the house where my children grew up, a previous owner had planted bamboo, not realizing its properties, i.e. it can spread up to 20 feet underground before ever breaking the surface.
Kyoto's Bamboo Forest, however, is magical. Basho wrote in a nearby hut.
