This is all really cool @airnz.bsky.social but mostly I’d just like our bag back from our flight 3 weeks ago.

Science affords us the luxury of forgetting the impact of infectious diseases
- In the 1st half of the 19th century 40-50% of children in US did not make it past the age of 5
- TB killed 1 in 7 people in US and Europe
- smallpox killed 80% of infected children

Infectious diseases killed Victorian children at alarming rates — their novels highlight the fragility of public health today
Between 40% and 50% of children didn’t live past 5 in the US during the 19th century. Popular authors like Charles Dickens documented the common but no less gutting grief of losing a child.

A single paragraph in Damien Grant's recent op-ed in Stuff I agree with wholeheartedly, lamenting the Covid-19 inquiry's report hasn't got sufficient publicity. The rest of the article is wrong on many counts, perhaps fuelling its spread on New Zealand disinfo/antivaxx/conspiracy Telegram ecologies.

Interesting thread, interesting piece!
If an #H5N1 pandemic starts tomorrow or in three months, there will be little mystery as to how it happened. The conditions are all there. They have been for a while.
So in some ways the more interesting question to me at the moment is: Why aren’t we in a pandemic yet?
Story here, 🧵 to come:

Why hasn’t the bird flu pandemic started?
Some scientists examining mutations found in H5N1 viruses fear major outbreak is imminent but others says pathogen remains unpredictable

Just a little reminder that the South Korean president who just declared martial law was elected two years ago on a wave of anti-feminist backlash. Misogyny is routinely part of the authoritarian package.
