Last week, People's History Museum invited me to give a tour, selecting my favourite objects on display.

I had to pick the Suffragette's Home poster and, from almost 100 years earlier, Cruikshank's 'Belle Alliance'.

So pertinent to the misogyny and rollback to 'trad-wives' we see today.

Paging @nationaltrust.bsky.social & @celiarichardson.bsky.social - courtesey of Manchester Archives, here's a 50 year old membership card belonging to Shena Simon, feminist pioneer, big National Trust fan, and distant relation of a certain Miss Potter!
Such chic membership cards in the 70s...

@manchesterup.bsky.social are too kind, sending me three stunning advance copies to get my teeth into. Starting the week with Wildly Different by @sarahjlonsdale.bsky.social, a book that I've been very much looking forward to!

In heaven seeing this portrait of Elizabeth Craven depicting the most deliciously beautiful 17th century embroidery. Butterflies, flowers, bugs and birds feature in the design.
Imagine if the dress had survived? 🦋 🐛🐌🌺🐞

I'm writing about a special place on the shores of Derwentwater for an upcoming talk. Dreaming of being there & living through #BeatrixPotter's Derwentwater sketchbook, painted on holiday of 1903. Exquisite.

Calling all #Manchester #history friends - please do join us at the Mechanics for the Margaret Ashton Lecture. We love celebrating women's lives across Greater Manchester who so often are overshadowed - Shena Simon was a true trailblazer and we can't wait to champion her story! t.co/4R9TS2dsuB

I've set myself a challenge to read 50 books this year! This is book no.2 and the 98th book I've checked out of ny local library since joining in Jan 2023. Any recommendations, send them my way.

In 2022 I co-curated an exhibition at the V&A, and in 2024, I'm reading the new Jaqueline Wilson book only to find said exhibition gets a cameo 😭😭😭 Ellie loved the exhibition about Beatrix Potter! I cannot handle it!

Crisp Cumbrian skies, and I was greeted in the car park by a deer. It could only happen at @nationaltrust.bsky.social Townend, the 17th century farmhouse occupied by the Browne family for over 400 years. More will be revealed but I'm here to talk all things wedding dresses... 👀

Spend, Spend Spend! at the Royal Exchange was absolutely gorgeous. I'd never heard of Viv Nicholson, but to see her story played out with hope and melancholy and northern sparkle was perfect. Get yourselves there, Manchester!

I'm always convincing myself that if I packed a bag and headed up to my favourite spot in the Hebrides, I'd sit somewhere with perfect views and write the thing I'm supposed to be writing, instead of procrastinating and daydreaming about the Hebrides.
