Been a bit since the last update on my HO US Tour Thomas: I finally got to making sure his whistles look right, especially the US Tour one. The brass part of it though looks rough, but the more I think about it the more I could salvage it. Also fitted the bell to get a feel now that it's painted.

To my custom modellers out there, how does one mask the gold parts to make it look like the pic on the right?

So I am trying to see how to wire directional lighting to my custom Thomas (pic of the circuit board for a KA). LEDF, Aux4, Aux3, and LEDR look like they need to be soldered in, but I don't know where the positive and negatives go for the LEDs. For context, I am doing DCC and have a decoder too.

New engine acquired, I am glad that I got it. Kills two birds with one stone, allowing a modern diesel to pair with my T1, and I allows some extra power alongside my CP engine. I had tried to file a complaint about the state of the handrails, as this is not acceptable for a model like this.

The practice model is now complete! I had to use clay to mask out the windows and make sure no Tamiya paint leaked, but removing them left this residue. Any ideas on what to do to prevent this are welcome. The drophead idea, while feasible, does need more tuning to be within NMRA standards as well.

Another thing is that the drophead coupler is finished, kinda. I need to sand down the jutting end of the pin I fashioned out of a piece of wire, but otherwise it's good to go! I am also working on a second one, and with the experience I got, it has been a breeze. Need to see how to glue them.

So a few things have been going on in the background, I have been practicing painting for Annie and Clarabel! Specifically, I painted the failed print to give myself a glimpse on how the coaches will look. Right now, I just need to put on the satin clear coat before moving on to the Tamiya paint.

One out of two drophead knuckle couplers is now done. Honestly, it was satisfying to see it able to swing back. I do envy though with British O Scale modelers being able to order these factory-made, while we OO/HO modellers need to kitbash these. Also excuse my voice, I'm recovering from bronchitis.

Got a minor update: after a second attempt sanding and grinding through metal, I now got a drop head coupler! It's not finished yet, however, as it still needs to be shimmed enough for clearance of the hook in addition to finding the proper 21 gauge wire to hold it together for swiveling up or down.

To those also wondering, I did also record the Mark 1s during their first test run. Ignore my snickering, I still find the sight of my Canadian Pacific diesel pulling these English coaches to be amusing.

The reason why I am making drop heads as I now received prints for my Annie and Clarabel! Unfortunately though, there seems to be an issue with Annie's file, causing her windows to print out warped. I got in touch with the creator of these tho to rectify the issue. They will also have screw-links.
June 22, 2025 at 3:28 AM
Working on HO Scale Drop head couplers (IRL example for comparison)! I also got screw-link couplings for this, but strictly making two of them as to interchange between knuckle and buffer-and-chain systems. Also tested two Mark 1 coaches I halfway converted to HO, but as expected it was a failure.

Are you going to do something like this too? I'm also curious the minimum turn radius would be for the baggage-club car, as that looks LONG lol. Still tho, it looks amazing so far, especially the wood craftship to make it longer!

This was 2601's first test run with a train earlier this Wednesday. Calibrating the motor took an hour, forward and backward. It was worth it. Only problem with it (though it's my fault) is that its rear axle derails on points when going to fast. Didn't do it on its own, so it might be the coaches.

And as a treat, more of my T1, and I was fortunate enough to not only pull an intermodal, but also double head it with my Pacific too. Unfortunately, all videos with it running are either too long or undesirable outtakes.

So it's been a bit. Unfortunately, I got set back with my custom, as I forgot to clean the nozzle of the can. However, I not only got 2601 back from ScaleTrains, I also got a new diesel 5009. Operations with 5009 were fun, but it sorely needs a Keep Alive. Here's some shots with them.

I also want to thank @peachyfennec.bsky.social for printing out Thomas' brake pipes and whistle. Without them, he'll be not the Thomas I envision. I am looking to adding those curved pieces on his front running board like how his TVS prop has them. I cutted it by card but I'm scared to install them.
