I actually don’t know their full implementation only the details they’ve released that insists it not. You may well be right. However Google Maps and Alexa which aren’t robovoice are both text-to-speech implementations and predate what we now call GenAI

Thanks for your kind words, it’s a look I’ve cultivated for the last 31 years

Is it? Because Embark insist it’s not. If they’re lying about that then it’s different. Cheaping out on voice actors is a fair critique! But text to speech has existed for decades and we have been using it for our sat navs, Alexa, etc. I’m a computer scientist too, not sure how that is relevant.

Haha what? The article is saying the use of AI is bad and bases that on two tools that aren’t generative AI and have existed for decades. Yes they then explain the differences for machine learning, but if it’s not a generative AI tool why mention it all?
November 10, 2025 at 6:34 PM
Yes I agree that is a shame. That’s why I highlighted that paragraph, most won’t read the whole article and many will just go off the headline.
November 10, 2025 at 6:21 PM
Then why mention it at all? Because people now believe machine learning is bad cos “AI”

Yes fully criticise the use of TTS in video games if you want to fair play. But it’s not generative AI. Unless Embark reveal further details that reveal it is, then I stand by my criticism of falsely lumping it in with gen AI

I did read the review - and I take issue with this paragraph.
"Also like The Finals, this design is overshadowed by the spectre of AI. Arc Raiders uses machine-learning algorithms for its Arc animations, and text-to-speech-based performances generated from the voices of real actors."
November 10, 2025 at 5:32 PM
TTS is not generative AI - it's recordings of real actors that are then used to create new voice lines. It's a technology that has existed for decades.

Marking down Arc Raiders for using machine learning and text-to-speech, and lumping them together with generative AI, is incredibly misguided. In the case of Machine Learning it's downright disrespectful to the immense amount of engineering talent and effort involved.

Any PS5 upgrade coming with this one?

That would make a great slip mat!

I fail to understand how this is any better/quicker. "Gemini, text my wife I'm going to be 15 minutes late due to traffic" vs "Gemini, tell my wife I'm 15 minutes late and send it in a jokey tone" is actually one less word to say
