- relate to Ripley's fear of water the series repeatedly plays upon
- hint at the 5th Ripley novel, Highsmith's (weakish) "Ripley Underwater"

What looks like a factual error turns out a nice (and almost hidden) touch: It is plausible that Dickie Greenleaf as an aspirant painter and avid swimmer would take interest in an early Greek painting of such a subject matter, the more so as Paestum is but 70km from Dickie's studio in Atrani.
