Remarkably, when imagining longer – but not necessarily matching – delays, farsighted choices were associated with more vivid EFT. Thus, both temporally specific and unspecific mechanisms contribute to the impact of EFT on delay discounting by rendering the future more tangible. 8/9

So is the EFT effect specific to the imagined time point, then? Yes and no. When the imagined delay was even further in the future than the larger, later reward, the effect of EFT was numerically attenuated, but not quite abolished. 7/9

When - as in previous studies - the imagined delay matched the delay of the larger, later reward, we replicated the beneficial effect of EFT on farsighted choices. Strikingly, when the imagined delay instead matched the delay of the smaller, sooner choice option, EFT made choices more impulsive! 6/9
