The laws of the Ross Dependency are essentially NZ laws applicable to the conditions of the Dependency. This is one distinct category of our law extended to Antarctica. Another is that for criminal law purposes, acts or omissions occurring in the Ross Dependency are deemed to have happened in NZ

With that treaty, New Zealand law extended directly to activities in the Ross Dependency and the activities of New Zealanders in Antarctica. Subsequently (and gradually) the term "New Zealand" in legislation expanded to include the Ross Dependency.

DIRA ensures that farmers can enter and exit supply arrangements with Fonterra without penalty. Fonterra requires farmers to hold shares proportional to their milk supply. Non-farmers can invest in Fonterra through the Fonterra Shareholders' Fund.

In 2001, many small co-operative companies conglomerated into a national co-operative, Fonterra, now accounting for around 7% of the GDP and 96% of the NZ raw milk market. The Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001 (DIRA) was enacted alongside to regulate Fonterra's activities.
