There’s a quote I like: “Forcing your people to pay off a debt from birth does naught but engender ire.” - Not quite applicable to this situation, but the sentiment does. Letting people die to avoid paying money does nothing but make everyone pissed at you.

Like, Borderlands and Diablo are arguably the worst about this in terms of “Games where the DLC is great, but does nothing to change the story/progression, just adds on” but even then, sometimes you just wanna boot up a run of Demon Hunter or Mechromancer and run the game again.

I think some games are okay to get DLC, such as long-form RPGs that you can play differently each time. Diablo, Rogue Trader, the Pathfinder games, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, etc. are all games where DLC is fine because a revisit isn’t going to be the same experience every time.
