If Passaic County were made into a single city (either a bigger Paterson or a new "Passaic City"), it would have 526,597 people in 185 square miles, making it more populous than Atlanta proper, and more populous than Kansas City proper with just 3/5 the land area.

If all of Union County, NJ were brought together into one city ("Union City" or a bigger Elizabeth), that city (with 594,160 people in 2024) would be more peopled than Baltimore, Milwaukee, and Sacramento, while having the same amount of land (103 square miles) as said Milwaukee.

If Essex County, NJ were made into a single city ("Essex City" or an expanded Newark), it would be the 19th-most-peopled city in the US, beating out SF, Seattle, and Denver, while being physically smaller than Denver at 126 square miles.

If Bergen County, NJ, were made into a single city ("Bergen City" or an expanded Hackensack), it would be the nation's 15th most populous city with 978,641 people. It would beat out Charlotte, Indianapolis, San Francisco, and Seattle while being physically smaller than the first two at 234 sq mi.

If Hudson County, New Jersey were consolidated into a single city (either a new "Hudson City" or an expanded "Jersey City"), it would be the US's 22nd most populous city proper - beating out Denver, DC, and Boston - and would be the 3rd densest city in the top 50, also beating Boston.

Yeah, Hartford is so tiny relative to its county. Merging the city and county might be okay here. It's hard to tell with New England - the suburban development is so sparse, it's hard to tell what's undeveloped and what's developed.

On the contrary, Polk County, Iowa forms a single contiguous metro area for the most part, meaning that municipal consolidation would be advantageous!

Story County, Iowa, where smaller cities are spaced among farm fields. Not a great candidate for municipal consolidation imo.

Hi @mnolangray.bsky.social @maxdubler.com - I'm reading SB 79 and I'm wondering what this phrase means.

If I'm in a formerly single-family zone within 200' of a T1 transit stop:

The T1 zone gives me 75', 120 du/ac, and 3.5 FAR.

Does the 200' raise that to 95', 160 du/ac, and 4.5 FAR?

Or not?

ChatGPT is incorrect. According to the Global Human Settlement Layer 2025 via maps.ie/population, 24.2 million people leave west of the fault. Since California as a whole has 39.4 million people, that leaves 15.2 million people east of the fault.

In other words, it's 61%:39% west:east.

There should be a tunnel through this mountain that's blocking the R4 line in Vallès Oriental. I think it could speed the train up by at least 5 minutes.

Debe de haber un túnel debajo de esta montaña por esta parte del R4 en Vallès Oriental. Definitivamente reduirá el translado por al menos cinco minutos, tal vez mas.

Also, party offices should in all cases be in prominent locations in historic downtowns. There is no reason to have the party headquarters be in some random building out by the airport.

This looks nice!!!

For narrower lots, what about using the old NYC floorplans? Are the hallways too much?
October 19, 2025 at 7:37 PM
In DC, the lots are usually 100' deep, with alley access on the end. I wonder if homes could be built where there are two buildings, one facing the street and one facing the alley, with a small courtyard in the middle for a playground.

Personally I think that allowing the construction of a goodly amount of towers in El Poblenou/the greater Sant Martí district would also be helpful.

At the density of the current Eixample (35,700 ppl/km2), that would hold a population of roughly 900,000 people.

To conserve land against future demand, developing at the density of typical HK housing estates (200,000 ppl/km2) would hold a population of roughly 5 million people.

Is it time for Barcelona to begin developing the "Lower Llobregat River Agricultural Park" as a dense urban extension? It is 25 square kilometers of agricultural land. (1/2)

I was there on Saturday! Climbed the tower :)
