Just looking to expand my tech knowledge. DevOps, Linux, Ansible, IaC, python, aws, etc.
I get the joke regarding the year of the Linux desktop and that it never will come to fruition. But by what metric is that based on? Is it based on market share, or some other metric? Or is it just like "I use arch, btw" and has taken on a life of its own to not be quantified? 🤔

Just different variations of Linux. Linux is technically just the kernel. Different distros have different package managers (think app store). At a high level most work pretty similar with varying nuances. I'd probably pick something user friendly. Bazzite is immutable, and mint is great also

Depending on what distro you choose, it's not too bad to install from scratch. There's plenty of documentation out there and YouTube videos

Amazon has some used thinkpads too. Not sure how much storage you need, but there's options.

Look at Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, and ebay. Keep looking and you'll eventually come across a good deal. Especially with win10 hitting EOL

Yeah, the department that takes care of PCs. Can go by many names, but desktop department should be generic enough to serve as a "catch all" for the various names. Storage is getting cheaper, so you can either get a device with a large HDD, upgrade it, or add external storage performance depending

Good is quite subjective. What will you be using this for? And if you work somewhere large enough with a desktop department, ask if they have anything EOL or not windows 11 compliant that you can have for free. Most places have a 3 year hardware life cycle.

If I'm actually doing something from a live USB, i tend to use Knoppix which is Debian based. Really optimized to run live.

Pretty sure you're aware, but a lot of new Linux people as of late. So this is for them. But he wrote Git developing the Linux kernel. Not to be confused with the M$ owned Github, but actually git.
