Happy Blue Switch Day to those who celebrate!
L-R: A gadget cache by the amazing WVTim (West Virginia), sword in the stone geocache (Iowa), one of a Percy Jackson-themed set of geocaches (Virginia), and an ammo can in the woods ... for geocachers, there's treasure everywhere.

In honor of Independent Bookstore Day (isn't that every day?) a reminder that the seven independent bookstores on North Carolina's Outer Banks offer a bookstore crawl: pick up a bookmark with a handy map and get it stamped at each shop.

While the red-headed woodpeckers were flying around and feeding, a red-bellied woodpecker joined them. Both have a red head and are similar in size, but these photos show their differences. What a great way to finish off the #GBBC weekend.

Two weeks ago on this trail we spotted a lifer: a red-headed woodpecker. They are rather rare, but are sometimes spotted on this section of the trail. We were hoping to see one today, and were rewarded with two red-headed woodpeckers! Here are photos of one of them.

The last day of #GBBC here was sunny and breezy with a chill in the air. Hardly any birds in the yard so we went to a nearby walking and biking trail. After a few tufted titmice and Carolina chickadees, we spotted a pair of red-tailed hawks. #birds

After a heavy, near-freezing rainstorm, there was less variety in this morning's bird count, but saw one of our friendly neighborhood black vultures striking a "horaltic pose". Vultures use this fully outstretched pose to warm and dry themselves, and to control ectoparasites. #GBBC #birds
