Thanks for taking the time to do this, and spread it out over the whole weekend! It’s always nice to have this to look forward to 🖖🏻

A+! This one was so much fun. I’d love to see it onscreen

I thought the chapter from Caveat Emptor from Phug’s POV was funny and cute. “What are they called- “kaptans”?”

This was my first time reading them and they were fun! I would read more. There is enough of a story there for a full novel, but they solve the conflict pretty quickly. #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

Those are beautiful. What a lost art!
October 19, 2025 at 9:50 PM
I didn’t know that! I’m probably going to seek that out now for my bookshelf

Yeah I don’t know of any other notable artists who did these. Boris actually did quite a few, along with cover art for other fantasy/sci-fi novels at that time. He did some random franchise stuff (he even did a He-Man/ Skeletor painting!) he also did art for ads and billboards. Really cool dude.

Another really delightful line in this book. Validated parking does seem right in line with Ferengi modus operandi. Every time I pay $40 for stadium parking or $12 for a ballpark hotdog, I think of the Ferengi. I’m a “captive customer” 😜 #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

Look, the Ferengi have a high, let’s call it, Financial Constitution. An attack on them attempting to alter the most fundamental aspect of their culture was naturally weak. Then Landru rolled *really* low, and Starfleet appeared #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

It’s a cute story device, but idk if it actually makes sense from a xenoanthropological view. They could have just as easily become amazing artist, story tellers, or bread bakers stuck inside all day #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

He seems approachable and grandfatherly, and I like the nuggets about his Jewish culture, which is pretty unique in ST #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

I like the idea of a sketch cover, but when you look closely you can tell where it’s been clipped and pasted together. This wouldn’t fly on a physical book. It’s also hard to tell thats supposed to be a Ferengi. Though I do like his pose with the staff since that happens in the story #TrekBookClub

Drastic Measures would be fun! I’ve read it before but when it first came out. There are some fun Easter eggs and it would be a blast to discuss

And I’d love an excuse to get Ring of Fire. I feel like voting is going to be tough this time around!

A heavily stylized Boris Vallejo cover. I actually have this one on my bookshelf but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. Sometimes I pop into the used bookstore and just buy some numbered novels purely based on the wacky cover art

I absolutely love this scene, and how this particular Rule of Acquisition isn’t just a Ferengi practice. For engineers, it’s just part of the engineering/problem solving process. (“Social” engineering 🙂)

Aw yes it’s sweet to think about how this is Pelia’s legacy too, if you don’t have a problem with that kind of retconning. #TrekBookClub

A really good hindsight lesson in why the space station should have been disassembled! You can’t just leave that stuff laying around #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

I liked how utilitarian they were, down to their brown jumpsuits and brown everything #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

I mean, it was kind of an emergency situation. They didn’t exactly have time for ice breakers and norm-setting. I think everyone did the best they could, and it could have been worse had they not had Starfleet training #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

This seemed like such a realistic situation. I’m glad that Nog did his best to hold his own, and that did pay off in the long run. He didn’t allow their dismissive attitude to get in his head. #TrekBookClub

The Stephanie character was sort of recycled in the New Frontier Captain’s Table book about Mackenzie Calhoun. In that book, you learn about why Calhoun fell out with Starfleet (before coming back to captain Excalibur), and it has to do with another young lady/daughter named Stephanie #TrekBookClub

Super fitting bc as he is the proto-Calhoun! When Calhoun falls out with Starfleet initially, he goes into covert ops. Would have been neat to see Stone following a similar path, but we can always headcanon that! #TrekBookClub

There were a lot of weird characterization moments and things that were out of place. The author took a lot of liberties and risks. Maybe another reason why he said his wife said he reminded her of Quintin Stone haha #TrekBookClub

QumwI the Eminently Quotable 😂
Pitch perfect Peter David humor mixed with Klingon history which is a perfect recipe for me #TrekBookClub

He was really ambitiously tackling a super complex piece of Star Trek lore here. But also-was all of this established only 2 seasons into TNG? He may have been making a lot of assumptions #TrekBookClub
