A widespread fraud has been reported recently whereby seemingly sealed Switch games, among them many Mario games, contain a googly eye instead of a game (to mimic the cartridge rattling). Please check all games at the counter after buying to ensure the presence of the cartridge.

The quote “I outrank you in this scenario” is often misattributed to Bowser, as dialogue boxes in Super Mario Bros. did not make it clear who was speaking. However, the official novelization written by Shigeru Miyamoto shows that this is actually Mario's famous catchphrase.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA) there is an anti-hacking tool that can detect when an entity is placed in a location it should not be. This screen appears, and the player is booted back to the title screen. The image that appears on this screen is labelled "Mr. Erroll".

In Yoshi’s Island, the last background layer in most levels is a gradient generated by the game’s engine. The gradients are only ever seen partially, always being obscured by at least one other layer. Here are some of the most prominent gradients, extracted from the data.

This month's experimental post: We Need To Talk About Parallel Universes

Development files reveal that Super Mario Kart used to contain "Grass That Doesn't Slow You Down", which defeats the entire purpose of offroad grass in a racing game. The developers clearly had a low opinion of it, calling it "unnessesaly" [sic] in the code before removing it.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 contained a "dialogue test zone" during development. The area has been removed, but its dialogue still survives. It would have contained bizarre interactions such as a Toad saying "crab crab mochi crab crab crab" and another Toad saying simply "3".

The concept of Yoshi as a cartoonish dinosaur with a round snout can be traced back to a single sprite in the development files of Super Mario World that marked the transition point from a raptor-like snout to the modern design.

The Super Mario 64 patent lays out the internal order in which Mario reacts to hazards, essentially laying out his "preferences". This is what Mario believes is worth reacting to, in order from most to least important:
1. Quicksand
2. Poison gas
3. Low health
4. Being cold.
