Here for the facts and the community that cares about them.
The titles are intriguing. The push and pull off the titles make me think they'd be split narratives between earth and life among the stars. Shaping a new world in both places, deciding who to trust to lead, and how to learn from the past. History repeats, unless we learn and don't forget.

I just appreciate that we read these books, so thank you for adding them to this book club.

I would venture to guess she would see any belief system or religion as 'misguided'.

I can understand the perspective of Larkin, as she grew up outside Earthseed. There's skepticism and lack of understanding of her mother's vision and impact on others. She also observed the belief system of her 'parents' and that likely impacted her view of her mother's beliefs.

Yes, having a purpose and seeing your impact on others is an important piece of building a community that adapts and grows

Yes! We have to change to survive, and to thrive. Adaptability is key

You ultimately need others to survive. Sharing the load with a community, neighbors, etc is an important piece of moving from surviving to thriving. You also have to have a goal/vision for what you want your life to be and do everything you can to make it happen. And you have to be a bit ruthless.

I wonder if him being a man made a difference for me and how I react to his character. Would we have viewed what he did differently if it was a sister instead of brother? Overall, I did not find his character likeable in any way - but recognize the trauma that built both of them

It was a confusing and tough dynamic. It would have been interesting to have chapters from his point of view - would we have seen Lauren differently? Would we have understood him more? I don't know that I could forgive him for what he did. It was so patronizing too - 'I know better' always irks me.

I agree, it's like moving to a new house or starting a new job. If we don't make other changes in our life, then the move itself doesn't really change anything.

It felt like an add-on. The story was compelling without the 'destiny', and I wasn't really interested in whether or not they met that destiny. When I think about both books, the 'destiny' doesn't even register for me. The relationships, building community, the struggle was more important to me.

I love this book!! And the 2nd book in the series, and another one by Klune called Under the Whispering Door.

I'm not sure I related to any of them. I felt more like an observer while reading the book. I do know that I could never be part of the group hurting, stealing, killing others. That is something I cannot relate to at all - the hate, disdain, glee in harming - i just don't understand.

No, I don't think so. It's not a realistic goal. Whether they like it or not, we are a diverse nation with diverse thoughts, beliefs and histories. Christianity is just one belief system, not the only. When you don't treat people well, getting them to sign on to your belief system doesn't work.

Isn't that just the truth in life though, our children don't know anything about us except the person they live with after they are born. We have untold stories, interests, history that they will never know. It's up to us to give them more of ourselves, but Lauren doesn't get that chance.

I really was - the books hook you, shock you, encourage you, make you think, make you wonder, and overall create a powerful story.

I think there are many (helpful and cautionary) - the verses throughout both books highlight much of what we should be applying to our lives. Climate change, elections, how we treat others, community, beliefs, expanding our world.

It really is, especially when ignorance is unaware of itself.

It started out rough! But they made it and things changed.

Also, this verse is so true, how do we create space for learning and growing and getting out of our own way?

Right now, this one is on my mind - what comes next?

In order to rise
From its own ashes
A phoenix
First
Must
Burn.
