After all, our democracy works best when we can all participate in it.

So today, we celebrate 60 years of the Voting Rights Act and support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore and expand the protections we love from the original Voting Rights Act.

The goal is that everyone has equal access to voting, but in reality we’re not there. Since a Supreme Court case in 2013 weakened the VRA, we’ve seen hundreds (no, literally, hundreds) of new state voting rules that make it harder to vote.

If you’ve ever used a ballot drop box, voted in an accessible polling place, or registered to vote at your college address – you did all of that thanks to the VRA!

Have you ever seen voting resources in other languages? That is also thanks to the VRA! Participation in our democracy expanded to people who aren’t native English speakers.

In the years following the passage of the law, the gap between Black and white voters narrowed. More voices lead to more representation, and by 1971, there were 14 Black members of Congress.
