Young people won't remember this, but there was a time when you could just play the Sims by clicking the icon with 'the Sims' on your desktop and it just booted up, without making you log in past three or four different EA players.

Nintendo will reveal the successor to the Switch soon, with a patented AI upscaler. The patent suggests a focus on improving image quality for games, potentially indicating a 1080p screen.
Nintendo Patent Details Possible AI Upscaling Tech Headed To Switch 2
Nintendo has a little under three months to officially reveal the successor to the Nintendo Switch, but the company has been almost completely mum to date besides acknowledging that it will play your current Switch games. Fortunately, we have numerous leaks that paint a pretty vivid picture of what the machine will be like. Among those leaks have been confirmation that it will use an updated NVIDIA SoC, so DLSS upscaling is a given, right? Seems like not, actually. You see, Japanese companies—particularly tech companies, like Nintendo and Sony—have a very serious case of "not invented here" syndrome. Furthermore, NVIDIA is known for its cutthroat business practices. Put two and two together, and that explains why we have a new Nintendo patent, published December 31st, for "Systems and Methods For Machine Learned Image Conversion." Yep, that's what an AI upscaler does. The patent lists three fellows from Nintendo's European Resesarch & Development group, affectionately known as NERD, as the inventors. It goes on to clearly describe a real-time graphics upscaler much like NVIDIA's DLSS or AMD's FSR. Specifically, it talks about breaking up an image into a group of tiles, which are then processed by an AI with the help of "additional context data," likely referring to motion vectors and possibly other temporal data. This is, put simply, exactly how DLSS works. It doesn't make any sense that Nintendo would patent DLSS, though, and it's likely that NVIDIA would want per-unit royalties and perhaps ongoing support fees if Nintendo were to license DLSS from the chipmaker. Instead, the only assumption we can make is that Nintendo has elected to develop its own AI upscaler. This figure, from the patent, seems to clearly illustrate the overall concept. Supporting this idea is that the patent includes considerable discussion of how to train a convolutional neural network specifically for the purpose of upscaling game images. There would be no need to train a network if the technology were being licensed from someone else, so yeah. DLSS itself is optimized primarily for the large discrete GPUs that NVIDIA makes. It does have a performance cost that scales with output resolution, and it could be quite heavy for a dinky little GPU like the one in the Switch 2. Given that the Switch 2 will always have a fixed screen size, the model can make a lot more assumptions about both input and output that could make it better and more performant than DLSS. Another figure from the patent, clearly showing the tiling mechanism and the addition of "context data." Indeed, the patent document (which you can find at USPTO) seems to exclusively address the case of upscaling from 960×540 (or "540p") to 1920×1080 ("1080p", or Full HD). This could mean that the Switch 2's screen is a full 1080p resolution (an upgrade from the 720p screen of the Switch), or it could be a red herring. It's interesting to see such a specific use case targeted this way, though.

Nier: Automata is getting a new release date for its upcoming game. Fans can look forward to its launch on March 21, 2024.
New NieR Tease May Reveal Release Date of New Game
A new NieR update may have revealed the release of the next game in the Square Enix series. Recently, Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito pointed out that 2025 is the 15-year anniversary of the series. Once a niche series, NieR Automata has propelled the franchise closer to the mainstream, evident by the fact that it has sold over nine million units. A follow-up was always going to happen, but has yet to happen. It being the 15-year anniversary of the series though means it’s a perfect time to remedy this, and a recent tease from the aforementioned Saito suggests Square Enix agrees. “2025 will be a milestone year as it marks the 15th anniversary of the NieR series, so I’d like to do something for it! What should we do… maybe something with the next game, or developments related to that… I’ve been hearing the fans’ expectations. It’s a bit tricky, though,” said the producer. “That said, as I’ll likely be doing less direct work as a producer, I’d appreciate it if you could patiently look forward to what’s coming.” This is a pretty not-so-subtle tease that a NieR game is going to be announced this year. There’s no suggestion when it will release, but historical context may reveal exactly this. NieR Automata was notably announced in 2015, and then released in 2017. If the next NieR game is announced this year, then a 2027 release seems not just possible, but perhaps likely. Interestingly, if this is when the next NieR game releases, it will be around the release of the next-gen consoles, which are expected to be in 2028, though a new rumor suggests the next Xbox is actually coming out much sooner than this. NieR Automata was notably never delayed, which is the only thing that could disrupt this two-year cycle from repeating. Of course, Square Enix could have a different marketing approach to the game that could lead to it handling the reveal and the release of this new NieR game completely different. Considering the success of NieR Automata though there isn’t much reason to expect the approach to change a great deal, unless of course the game is being planned as a next-gen release, which then could throw everything out the window. That would be a lengthy period between reveal and release if this happens though. Alas, all we have right now is speculation.
