Trump's Wager says that Liberal institutions should collaborate with an authoritarian, because if the authoritarian proves durable, then they will be saved. But if the liberal order reasserts itself, they do not have to fear retribution, since liberalism doesn't do retribution. The only protection against the logic of Trump's Wager is deterrence. We aren't the point
Many people's aim is to simplify the world, the complexity of which has exploded. Science threatens these peoples' narcissistic worldview of being the God's chosen being, and thus, the center of the world. Their concern is, that if the world is bigger than mankind can ever explore, then we are not the point. Hitler's rise was possible because he was able to exploit the racial hatred and conspiratorial thinking that already existed. It's MAGA acolytes that see Trump as an extraordinary figure. He was a reality show grifter with a crumbling business; Hitler was an undisciplined drifter with delusions of grandeur. It's the soil that matters, not just the rotten harvest.
