I've only read two books by CJ Cherryh, and it was a while ago. In one of them, "Rimrunners", part of the protagonist's arc is helping to enable/allow the redemption arc of another main character.
(In the other book, "The Paladin", it's more about helping with rehabilitation to enable retribution.)

Best way to interpret it as is would probably be to say it’s asking you to put the 10 digits +/- 0 to +/- 9 into the 10 boxes…

Looks like there’s an error in the illustration- there are 10 boxes shown to fill, but the suggested solutions use only 9 digits each (+/- 1 to +/- 9) - looks like they’ve put “0” in for you, but also provided a box to the right of “0” to put the zero in.

Didn't work it out this way, but looks like, given the 16 different factors add up to 720, and the 9 of these to be used need to add up to 102, there's only two ways to choose 9 which add up to 102, and one of these won't work as 6 needs to be used for one of the two ways to add up to 10.

yes, and you have to add up to 10 two different ways, so the number these two ways share must go in the top right square
