LIRR lengthened platforms to 12 cars and built extra platforms along the Port Jefferson Branch in anticipation of electrification in the 1970's. They still haven't been used. www.thelirrtoday.com/2022/02/port...

The MTA has near-sighted plans to buy slow & expensive diesel equipment for our commuter system.
But the future of urban rail is electric, & they should be laying the groundwork now for a better system in the long run.
