I think you can set up an HSA without an employer, and you can even use that money for childcare. But that presupposes that there’s some sort of extra income you can stick in there which is probably unlikely if you’re an ACA recipient. But HSAs roll over, so it’s like investing in your future health

I have one and put the max amount i can in it every year, and it always gets used. Family of four, glasses, braces, ER visits, a root canal here, a crown there, and getting nickeled and dimed with co-pays by our PPO. Prolly not worth it by yourself, but as you get older, more incidentals pile up.
