Tbh i feel like that's just been a thing with humans for years now. I'm not saying now is any better, like, god damn do I hate the world atm but still.

The manual option definitely attracts more player interaction, which is a big plus in my mind! What you could do is base the UI on a steam loco's actual cab controls (albeit simplified) - make the throttle knob look more like a steam loco regulator, the direction toggle like a reverser lever, etc?
