🪦 Ghostly & macabre legends of #Harrow & district. #HauntedHarrow #HarrowWeald #HauntedBenches #parkphantoms #cemeteryspectres #gardenshedghosts & c. #pulp #horror & supernatural fiction; stuff like that. Tower Hamlets also features quite a lot. 💀
A new bench to haunt. The Case is Altered, Old Redding, on Wed 4th. Closed in 2022, beginning to show signs of wear and tear, and personal favourite ... haunt. It's a soul thing. #ghostlyvibes #terrifyingworldofhauntedbenchproject

Terrible to admit, but I miss the News of The World, if only for their regular 'undercover investigations' into Satanists, Black Magicians, "evil" witches & co, though I'm guessing they were no fun for the non rabid self publicists among their victims. Anyway, here's a poster from 1994.

Some photos from the Wapping Walk last night, all taken by the bride of dem. Conditions, rainy - in other words; perfect.

Wapping Halloween Trail, Friday 31st October 4pm-7pm. Annual organised trick or treat event - very fond memories of bumping into an undead nun on Wapping Lane near Hermitage Walk this time last year.

Found some more #HighgateCemetery ephemera. These from late 90s/ early 00s. Maybe they still print them? The guide to Western Cemetery graves & mausoleums is well handy. Found its Eastern Cem companion too, if anyone wants it. #FOHC #FriendsofHighgateCemetery

Perhas my favourite of the illustrations. A charming photo of the Haining's daughter, Gemma, with the "family scarecrows."

The much-missed #Peter_Haining; a man with a book for every occasion. 'The Scarecrow: Fact and Fable' (Robert Hale, 1988)

Here's a cover scan (couldn't get anything to upload yesterday so testing I got everything fixed)

Ah, different [really horrible] platform, but can you tell me if is this is also a scam? Got it last week - I'd only been on there a few hours!

... here's the rest.

1/2 #HighgateCemeteryWest leaflet circa late 90s (are they still doing these?)

... and once you've read it, continue with this (took me all of a day to burn through it). 🖤

#Booktoreadonahauntedbench. J. A. Brooks, 'Britain's Haunted Heritage,' 1990. Think his #Ghosts_of_London may be better known. This one is just as beautiful, with added benefit of mostly full colour photos & illos throughout.

It's a similar story with St. George in the East churchyard in Cable Street. After WWII the surviving slabs were either lined against a wall or taken down into the crypt. Here's a personal favourite for obvious reasons.

Current library loan, KR devotes maybe a third to growing up in Harrow/ attending St Gregs, Kenton/ St James, Burnt Oak. Mentions meeting the 'arra in the Wealdstone Wimpey Bar, drinking in Red Lion, Harrow Weald, etc. Guaranteed seeped in 2nd generation Irish Catholic guilt. #Dexys #Burn_it_down 🖤

From those I've seen, would say British crime mags from same period shared the same aesthetic. I'm guessing you're familiar with Eric Godtland & Dian Hanson's 'True Crime Detective Magazines' (Taschem, 2013), but if not, right up your street.

Today is the 73rd anniversary of the Harrow & Wealdstone tragedy which claimed the lives of 112 passengers and railway staff. Would love to see a statue of Abbie Sweetwine, 'the angel of platform six,' either on the High Street or maybe inside the station itself?

Mine was a modern edition of Richard Matheson's 'Hell House' for £2 from Spitalfields Crypt Charity Shop (Watney Market chapter). Happy reading!

As promised, 3 trademark dreadful photo's from tramp around Harrow on the Hill/ Old Redding/ Harrow Weald & Queensbury on Fri 3rd. Rain did its bit. Mass in prog in St Mary's, so didn't get to check out books. Beloved bench on Weald Lane corner still AWOL presumed RIP.

Hoping to spend tomorrow making thorough nuisance of myself at St. Mary's churchyard, Grims Dyke, Harrow Weald, Honeypot Lane - probably nip in Primark while I'm at it. Weather forecast: rain all day = Ideal conditions. #hauntedbenchontour

#HatchEnd station pre-WWI. Disembark here for the ghost of Dan the dancer, Percy the peacock, and practitioners of the "detestable art of #witchcraft." Keep off the rails. Beware of the kamikaze pheasant. #MysteriousMiddlesex #HauntedHarrow
