I think the reason for bad box office numbers is self-evident. When we had grainy 12" 4:3 CRT TVs, of course the big screen was a draw. Now, with cheap 80" 4K+ TVs and sound bars, why would you want to sit in a box with a bunch of strangers, pee in a dirty bathroom and pay $12 for popcorn?

I never got deep into acting, but I always thought that "method" meant that you sort of crawled into the character and kept the persona on at all times while working on the job. What does that have to do with box office numbers?

You're not alone, CaitCat. It just takes a while for people to find each other in a fractured online universe. Don't give up.

I've been alive long enough to see almost none of the futurist predictions of my childhood come true. I'm sure they were doing their best, but absolutely none of them (or SF writers of the time, for that matter) seemed to grasp the depths of human greed and how it would sabotage the future.

These days, I often think of the film Idiocracy, and how, ridiculous as it is, it also maybe didn't go far enough. Yes, the comical future government is debased and ignorant and incompetent... but they are still good people and actually want to help. They just don't know how.

Annihilation is the rarest of treats- a completely original SF novel. Enjoy all the success, because you deserve it!

So you've managed to unintentionally write the novel version of a solo exquisite corpse? That is a fantastic achievement!

The Southern Reach series is like nothing I've ever read before, and I've been reading for a long time. People ask me to describe it, or give a summary, and I really can't, except to laden my attempt with superlatives and ask them to read it.
