Not the same but similar. I’d attend university first, and serve as an officer rather than the service first and then university. And the temptation to fly or sail rather than get down in the mud would be awful strong. I was born with feet flat as a pancake so the infantry was no cakewalk :)

Consider allowing for a niche of us who knew full well how monstrous war and the service is and would be, and with eyes wide open served because they were flat better suited to it than others. Not just those whose scruples were too strong, but those that have none, and the many who try and can’t.

Weren’t they a shock when we found them? At least to the men on the ground. And hell we entered the war so late really, Britain was standing alone by then - but that is just my layman’s understanding.
