2019 had the worst outbreak of measles since 1992 - before it was eliminated in the US in 2000. The vast majority of the people who contracted it then were unvaccinated. The trend dropped off during the pandemic, but it's rapidly climbing again.

2023: 63 cases
Highest weekly case count: 11

2024: 285 cases
Highest weekly case count: 38

First 2 months of 2025: 164
Highest weekly case count: 57

In case you're wondering, these numbers do NOT count the COVID-19 vaccine as it is not a required vaccine in the state of Michigan.

Michigan folks - here's a snippet of the worst immunization and waiver rates (Kindergarten) in Kent County - many are WELL below the 95% recommended threshold for herd immunity, and not because of medical exemptions. Check the link to find your school/county.

As measles outbreaks are being reported in multiple states, it's time to check your MMR vaccine status. Check your county's immunization rates, and if you have children, check the rates for their school. Anything under 95% is below the threshold for herd immunity.
