She was sick and spent the day sleeping so I finally ran OM3 upstairs to a 3428X (24x1gb, 4x10gb SFP+) I had sitting around. Port 28 is the uplink, 26 is my spare parts TrueNAS box, 25 is my Proxmox gaming rig.

Slightly less better received was my stance traditions are just peer pressure from dead folks.

Heading in to Christmas season, chatting with coworkers about traditions: "My family is Welsh, I'm 90% sure I'm using the English word because it has vowels."

Taught Teeny/Giggles how to drive #HomeAssistant - The icon for the Kasa bulb in my leg lamp is now a drumstick.

Fucking Windows.
Installing it: "You need a key" so here's an 11 Enterprise key. "Your key works I'm activated."
Tries to enable dark mode: "You must activate Windows."
Fine, then "Windows can't activate."
I change key, giving it the exact same key again, "Hai! Life is good!"
Fucking Windows.

Canada and hockey, man. Tonight's Guelph Storm game: 4,848 tickets scanned. Sleeman Center capacity: 5,100.

I never see stun times over ~30ms: If you are watching 30fps video, it won't drop a frame. 60fps, it will drop one. DAC cables are cheap and 10gbe RJ45 transceivers seem familiar, but if you have SFP+ cages go fiber. It's a little more expensive out of the gate, but future you will thank you.
"Stun Time": When you change something about a virtual machine while it is running, how long it "freezes," usually measured in ms. Storage? No stun. From one host/hypervisor to another, the delay between Host A vm tapping out and Host B vm taking over.

I am also a _very_ big fan of how it doesn't need SSH. Once I migrate my main cluster, that will drastically reduce syslog noise.
So just dicking about, spare parts #TrueNAS box is 25.10.0.1 and the N100 is #Proxmox 9. I'm using boomshankerx's proxmox-truenas repo and I am thriving. The only sticky wicket? Does it work with HA because TheGrandWazoo's freenas-proxmox does not.

I normally buy the 10Gtek Intel 82599 dual SFP+ cage "Imma use the whole x8" cards and they run me ~CDN$130. The single cage x4 M2 shits are like $70 a piece so 10 bucks more. This TrueNAS box's motherboard cost $130, my real one was $470.

"enp42s0" is its onboard gigabit ethernet, it doesn't have the PCIe lanes to throw in an x8 HBA and x8 dual port SFP+ ethernet card so I improvised: It has 2 x4 M2 slots I'll never use so enp1s0 is an x4 10gbps M2 card. After I dig out another SATA cable for the modular PS, there will be enp2s0.

So spare parts TrueNAS box is up. "tnas01-boot" is whatever's left on 2x WD Blue 500gb SSDs connected to the motherboard's SATA ports. tnas01-2tb is 2x 2tb Crucials on its 9300-8i HBA. The HBA has 6 free SATA plugs so I'm gonna get one of those 3x5.25 -> 5x3.5 hotswap enclosures and spinning rust

Just to give context: Peak #GuildWars2 #wvw, my wife would be yelling for me to come help ... as she's winning a 4v1. She refuses to buy the expansions because you need to blub up and can't solo (or duo) it. I agree.

Friend: "Youve more than caught up but you're late to the AI party."
Me: "I threw my invite in the trash I didn't want to be here."

Dad: "Your mom might not like the BeeLink, she says the tower keeps her company."
By 11am tomorrow there will be a pack of 700 googley eyes on his doorstep. Aside, did you know its only like 9 bucks for 700 googley eyes?

Now the shitty part: I have to crawl out from under a combined 160lbs of dog cuddles and go to bed because, this side of 40, there is no good night's sleep on the couch.
November 14, 2025 at 6:28 AM
I also think my mom can get by with a Beelink N150 running Windows 11, It'll be there tomorrow between 7 and 11am.
Dad: "How much did we owe you?"
Me: "You paid for my childhood, nothing."

Also this 4xPurePhoto-RealPLSKR model has been pegging my 4070 for the last half hour. Wonder how its going to turn out

The point of the previous (omg i can't believe I'm saying this) "skeets" is to check my privilege: I can "vm this" and "iscsi that" because i have phat arrays and "20gbps" from everything to everything else. I see ~30gbps through my core switch migrating Proxmox vms.

I also dont really care about Windows 11 losing local accounts because even my $200 Beelinks come with Pro and 2 of my VMs are DCs so I can "Domain join instead." Added advantage is I can make GPOs to do shit like make the right click menu useful again.

At the center of it all is a Fortigate 100F I named "EdwardFiftiHands" (my old 100D was EdwardFortiHands) and a shitload of vlans. He has 2x10 802.3 to a 16 port SFP+ switch, which has 2x10 802.3 to a "28 port" 350w 24x PoE port switch.

Since I spent a lot of time and money ubergeeking while still maintaining the most important rating of all: SAF (spousal approval factor), the lab is 3 Proxmox nodes (2x8c/16t Ryzens w 128gb ram, my 3900x [12c/24t] gaming rig with 64gb, all with 2x 10gbps SFP+ ethernet) running 19 VMs.

I know there's a lot of hate on for TP-Link, but when I use python-kasa to connect a Kasa device to that SSID, HomeAssistant's like "Hey dude, found this thing."
InternetOfCrap is a 2.4ghz ssid on a $20 router running OpenWRT bridged with a VLAN. My firewall just does DHCP, it doesn't need internal or internet access because my HomeAssistant VM is multi-homed on that same vlan.
