Hi Jon, it is not — the UKR charter is using our 6-car DEMU 1013 only.

When in notches 1/2/3, insufficient train heating voltage is available, likewise the Buffet Car motor-generator spins down and its output is lost.

Don't attempt to microwave something just as we embark on a long crawl on restrictive aspects behind a stopping train on the North London Line!

When train heating (and/or, on 60118, Buffet Car power supply) is turned on, when master controller is in OFF the engine speed will rise to 620 rpm, this is called "preheat".

Upon starting off with "preheat" you can hear the characteristic sound of the engine speeds first returning to idle.

Additionally, the Load Regulator when full generator field strength has been reached but further load is called for, applies each of 2 stages of Traction Motor Field Weakening.

To answer your points about heating: power for train heat is only sufficient at 620 rpm and above.

In Notches 5, 6 and 7 the Main Generator field excitation is automatically adjusted under the control of the Load Regulator. This maintains the nominal engine-speed for each of these notches and so optimises the output of the power unit.

Hi and thanks for taking an interest in this!

You're correct in your RPMs for the 7 notches.

You're correct that Main Generator field excitation is increased progressively from notches 1 to 3.

I believe the Field strength in notch 4 is the same as in 3.

Thank you Andreas for your exceptional dedication to travelling on our train, and for your appreciation for it and what we do. I hope your homeward journeys went OK, and glad to see you got time to have a look round Norwich first.
