@UMassEcon. I study heterodox strands of political economy and development. Views are my own.
By preventing Maria Corina Machado and other opposition leaders from participating in Venezuelan elections, Maduro definitely shot himself and other socialists in the foot. Democracy is the essence of socialism extended to ALL aspects of society, viz., politics, economy, (1/2)

A party that claims to speak for Palestinians yet reinforces an apartheid like structure against Ahmedis and other minorities at home, while simultaneously disrupting civic life in the name of protests, needs to be checked, if not stopped.

The bigger puzzle should be that despite having a military that is comparable to the world's leading powers, why doesn't Pakistan have an economy and an edge in research, science, & technology just like them?

Does the law of the land not apply to these so-called tribal areas? What allows these tribal families to act like a state within a state & murder with impunity anyone, including their kin, in the name of barbarian virtues? Serious lapse of the writ of Baluchistan and Pakistan's government.

It's called 'capitalism'.

This reminded me of what Haroon Bilour's late father, Bashir Bilour--who was also martyred by the TTP-- said, "the night when we are destined to be in the grave can never be spent at home.” Rest in peace to all Pakistanis who became victims of terrorism.

No denying that we all have to make a living, but it would be interesting to see if this dynamic is indeed behind many of the egregious takes that Punjabi heartland progressives are taking nowadays, especially vis-à-vis periphery nationalists.

While ideologically touting a utopian version of markets and capitalism that never existed or can never exist, in practice, Friedman made it normal to defend the most indefensible attributes of capitalism.

1- Even if Pakistan boasted a larger minority population, they would still not get to nominate (let alone elect) their representative for many of those executive-level positions (PM & President in particular) because the constitution obviates their elevation to those positions.

Mainstreamers discover the Freudian idea of "over-determination," which Marxists later used for social analyses.

When the empire strikes, it cripples one's ability to function as a normal nation-state and consequently the entire society falls apart. Considering the state-of-being of our economy, education, science, technology, and any other indicator of progress, (1/2)

Pakistan has talent. If ever there was a doubt, the achievements of Pakistani youngsters prove the naysayers wrong. However, the worrying part is that the country is unable to retain most of this home-grown talent and constantly loses it to Western or other emerging nations. (1/n)

This is a pertinent question. On the one hand, as progressives, we have the moral imperative to be internationalists, but on the other hand, if war or other state conflicts lead to instability, then that could result in mass displacement of people, forced migrations, (1/3)

While this paper focuses on MA, land use regulations are generally very stringent in blue states, resulting in higher housing costs and contributing to a cost-of-living crisis. The 'abundance agenda' folks specifically cite this issue as one of the reasons why people (1/2)

The problem with the Indian & Afghan narrative of Pakistan backing terror proxies is not that it is not historically inaccurate, but it is their gall to think that they know better than the UN, FATF, and other international bodies with whom Pakistan routinely cooperates (1/2)

Because Pakistan is a much smaller state, and its military capability is at least three times less than that of India. So, if cornered, then Pakistan has no other option than to contemplate the use of nuclear weapons to assure its sovereignty.

What a tragedy. Pakistan and South Asia, in general, are very unsafe places for women, especially those who dare to step into the public sphere for their livelihoods or other social engagements.
