But not everyone is confused, even when Trump’s ramblings are at their most bewildering. Somehow, the message gets through to those who are attuned, even if the real message lurks beneath the stream of words he is speaking. With Trump, the messenger is the message and regardless of the subject, the message, flashing like a metronome from the chthonic depths, always asserts the same subliminal themes of power, grievance, retribution, whiteness, and superiority. Trump isn’t speaking in code so much as he is connecting at an instinctual level to a network of cultural affinities, prejudices and insecurities that exist beyond grammar and etymology and without which Trump and his followers would be lost. As it stands, though, it is we who are lost, trapped in language and rationality, unable to interpret the dark currents that Trump’s otherwise abstruse asseverations send coursing into some of the more reactionary precincts of the Republic.

No expense (or blood) spared to deny other countries' citizens the services they hope to keep from U.S. citizens.
The history of U.S. aggression towards Latin America shows that such interventions bring nothing but misery for the working people and oppressed of the region, all so U.S. companies can pillage natural resources and exploit local labor. This alone is reason enough that workers, students, socialists, internationalists, and all who oppose the Far Right and militarism in the United States should denounce Trump’s military escalations. But in the heart of the empire, we have even greater reason to be in solidarity with the countries facing the worst threats from the United States. It is the same war on drugs being used to justify attacks on Venezuela and military expansion throughout Latin America that is also being used to justify militarization of U.S. cities. This shows clearly how our struggles are connected.

By my calculations, government-granted patent and copyright monopolies transfer a total of well over $1 trillion a year to the people in a position to benefit from them out of the pockets of the rest of us. They not only hugely raise the price of items like prescription drugs, medical equipment, computers, and software, they also are an enormous source of waste and corruption. This is especially the case in the pharmaceutical industry, where patent monopolies give drug companies an enormous incentive to lie about the safety and effectiveness of their drugs. The most extreme example of this corruption was with the opioid crisis, but the problem occurs all the time.
